Death at Chappaquiddick Overviews

I still feel a lot of bitterness. It's been a long time, but to me it was just yesterday. I'll never forgive him. I don't believe the truth has been told. I don't know the truth. None of us knows the truth. It's still a mystery . . . . There was just too much deception, too much double talk and cover up. -- Joseph Kopechne, Women's News Service This then is the real horror of the case. Mary Jo in the bottom of that upside-down car, wedged in, clawing, clutching and straining for air and for life in the total blackness at the bottom of Poucha Pond with water creeping higher and higher. Completely terrified, she waited for help from Senator Kennedy - who was on the phone seeking help not for Mary Jo, but for Senator Kennedy. From Death at Chappaquiddick On July 19, 1969, Senator Edward Kennedy drove off a bridge on Chappaquiddick Island, leading to the death of his young female companion and, the authors contend, an extensive cover up to protect Kennedy's political ambitions. The Tedrow recreates the unexplained events of that fateful night, examine the self-admitted panic of a U. S. senator, and point by point puncture Kennedy's sieve-like account of the tragedy. The authors' exhaustive investigation produces solid answers to curious questions. Most damning of all, they present evidence that Kennedy fled the scene in panic, then spent hours telephoning cronies seeking political protection while a helpless Mary Jo Kapechne slowly suffocated in a pocket of air inside the submerged auto. Richard L. Tedrow served for 17 years as Chief Commissioner of the U. S. Court of Military Appeal and is the author of the standard reference for U. S. military court martials. Thomas Tedrow is a freelance writer in Houston, Texas.

Death at Chappaquiddick CustomerReview

"During the evening of July 18, 1969, Sen. Edward Kennedy attended a private party on Chappaquiddick Island. He left the party with Mary Jo Kopechne some time between 11:15 p.m. and 12:45 a.m. on July 19, 1969. They drove toward an isolated beach, but never made it because Sen. Kennedy's car went off the Dyke Bridge into Poucha Pond. He emerged alive and took almost ten hours to report the accident. Mary Jo did not escape from his submerged car and died sometime during the night. Her death has been the only certainty in the tragedy. Everything else has been shrouded in contradiction, controversy and denials."

After this opening paragraph, the authors of DEATH AT CHAPPAQUIDDICK clearly state what they set out to do: write a complete account of the incident at Chappaquiddick. "The facts draw their own conclusion. Chappaquiddick is the Senator's own doing... It is a very serious issue that shows how a potential President of the United States reacted during his time of crisis. For this reason, Chappaquiddick cannot be ignored."

I opened this book at 8:00 p.m. and finished it at 11:00 p.m. Could NOT put it down. It's only 217 pages long, but it absolutely, positively devastates any defense, or remorse, offered or expressed by Ted Kennedy about his actions that night.

I found it particularly damning that 17 telephone calls were placed, all billed to Sen. Kennedy's credit card, either by Ted Kennedy or his associates. Five of these were placed just after the accident, before Kennedy left Chappaquiddick for his hotel in Edgartown. The first to the family compound in Hyannis Port -- a call lasting 21 minutes. Ted Sorensen, a Kennedy advisor, and Kennedy's attorney, Burke Marshall, were also telephoned before he left the island. Yet, he could not summon appropriate help for the woman trapped in that car.

As the authors put it, "these five calls do not indicate shock. They indicate a desperate man trying to get advice and give warning about political firestorm approaching. One must figure that each person he spoke with either called other Kennedy loyalists or made plans to aid the Senator. None of them tried to aid Mary Jo. Even a long distance, anonymous call to the Edgartown police could possibly have saved her life."

It also was a revelation to find out that there was a volunteer firehouse just across the way from the cottage where the party was going on, where Kennedy returned after the accident. A firehouse! Potential help for the woman trapped in the car was right there, but she was ignored in the rush to protect Ted Kennedy's reputation and political future.

The authors investigate every angle of Kennedy's timeline of events. They include the text of Kennedy's television speech about the accident; Kennedy's testimony at inquest; the Court's decision against the exhumation of the body for an autopsy. The behavior of the police and prosecuting authorities toward Kennedy is explored. If you have an interest in what happened at Chappaquiddick or in the character of Ted Kennedy (and, it must be said, the people who surrounded him, including the police, the prosecuting authorities, and others) you cannot ignore this book.

The social patterning of injury repetitions among young car drivers in Sweden [An article from: Accident Analysis and Prevention] Overviews

This digital document is a journal article from Accident Analysis and Prevention, published by Elsevier in 2005. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

Description:
A national register-based cohort study was conducted to explore whether the social patterning of car drivers suffering injury repetitions differs from that of once-injured drivers in a cohort of young persons in Sweden (aged 18-26). Injury repeaters were defined as individuals sustaining injuries as a car driver on more than one occasion over an 8-year period. Only subjects obtaining a driver's licence before the age of 27 were included in the study. The social variables considered were, in turn, gender, socioeconomic position of origin, and own educational attainment. Attention was also paid to age at licensing. Two types of comparisons were made, using odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals. First, the odds of injury repeaters were computed using the once-injured car drivers as a reference group. Second, odds were compiled for once, twice, and three or more times injured people, using the non-injured at all as a comparison group. The results show that, by and large, the injury-risk distribution of car drivers with injury repetition does not differ from that of one-injury drivers with regard to gender, education, or socioeconomic group. However, drivers from self-employed households show greater odds of injury repetition (OR 1.65, CI 1.02-2.67) than of one injury compared with drivers from the families of non-manual employees. Since the number of injury repeaters is low and their socioeconomic distribution is very similar to that of the once injured, there is no need to regard them as a group at excess risk or different from the one-time injured. Reducing risk levels and risk differentials for the one time injured should therefore receive priority with regard to traffic-injury prevention.

Virginia Car Accident Claims Overviews

David Marks grew up in Annandale, Virginia, attending Annandale High School, Mary Washington College and then University of Richmond Law School. Mr. Marks begin his legal career representing auto insurance companies. He is now a partner in the Fairfax, Virginia law firm of Leiva & Marks, P.L.C., where he limits his practice to personal injury law. Mr. Marks has devoted his career to representing individuals who have suffered serious and catastrophic injuries due to motor vehicle accidents. He recognized very early that the insurance companies have a great advantage in negotiating over the victim of a car accident. It was apparent that the people involved in motor vehicle accidents had a lot of questions that weren;t going to be answered by the insurance companies. Do not speak to the insurance company until you read this book!
